The Forest Stewardship Council is committed to recognizing the best forest stewardship practices in the world. This means involving people and including their ideas in all aspects of FSC.
This page contains information on the various FSC Canada and FSC International standards and policies that are currently under review or development.
February 19, 2010: They include certification requirements for forest management enterprises seeking to make claims about their progress towards FSC certification with a commitment to achieve FSC certification in a defined period of time and the accreditation requirements for certification bodies in order to offer this service to their clients. The requirements are based on the FSC Policy Document “Modular approaches to forest certification (2005)”. This is a first draft for public consultation and will be submitted for approval to the FSC Board of Directors together with a compilation of comments. If outstanding issues are identified by stakeholders during the current consultation period, a subsequent draft will be released for a final round of consultation before submission to the FSC Board of Directors. Comments must be submitted by March 19, 2010. Comment forms are available below:

Principles and Criteria
Adopted almost 15 years ago, FSC’s Principles and Criteria form the guiding framework for developing regional forest stewardship standards appropriate to local social, ecological and economic conditions, and are currently under review.
This is the first revision of the FSC Principles and Criteria, since they were established by the FSC membership in 1994. Some changes have been made at different FSC General Assemblies, however in recent years there has been a growing recognition, by stakeholders, of the need to review and/or revise the FSC Principles and Criteria.
Take this opportunity to get involved in this first comprehensive review and revision of the FSC Principles and Criteria.

Background on the Revision Process
FSC announced the launch of the Review and Revision of the FSC Principles and Criteria on September 3, 2008. After completing a comprehensive selection process, in January 2009, FSC established the P&C Review Working Group for the review and revision of the P&C. The FSC also established an additional Advisory Group, in April 2009, to support the P&C Review Working Group in ensuring that the actual and potential views of all FSC stakeholder groups receive due consideration.
The final draft will be submitted to the FSC membership, FSC's highest decision-making body, in 2010 for approval.
FSC has decided to re-open the consultation phase for the advice note on Nurseries and Implications for the scope of forest management enterprise (FME) evaluation (FSC-ADV-30-102).
The advice note addresses issues which are now also under consultation in the 2nd Draft of the revised Principles and Criteria.
Comments must be submitted to Hans Joachim Droste, hj.droste@fsc.org by September 4, 2009.
FSC-POL-20-002 FSC Standard 'Policy for the Association with FSC' is available for stakeholder consultation. The final draft incorporates feedback received on the second draft of the policy. Comments can be submitted to policy.standards@fsc.org by July 1, 2009.
Version 1-0 of FSC-STD-20-014 FSC Dispute Resolution Requirements specifies the accreditation requirements for certification bodies when dealing with disputes related to FSC certification. The Consultations period will take place from October 23 to November 23, 2008
Version 1-0 of FSC-DIS-01-018 Dispute Resolution Overview document presents and overview of the proposed new dispute resolution system related to FSC certification.
This document provides a generic framework for Integrated Pest, Disease and Weed Management (IPM) on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified estates. Use of the framework is not mandatory, or intended to be prescriptive, but adoption of its principles will assist managers in demonstrating that they have a strategy for reducing, minimising or eliminating the impact of any remaining pesticide use, as is required by FSC criterion 6.6. Without following some form of IPM framework, it may be more difficult for managers to demonstrate they are meeting the requirements of criterion 6.6. Managers and experts are encouraged to develop locally or regionally specific strategies based on the principles contained in the generic framework. Examples of a country strategy from which this generic framework is adapted, and a database of additional strategies for a range of individual pest, disease and weed problems from other regions across the world, are provided as resource to help managers develop their own regional specific strategies within the generic IPM framework.
