Corey B. Brinkema Named as President of FSC-US
(back to top)

Washington, D.C., October 26, 2007: The Board of Directors of Forest Stewardship Council-US (FSC-US) is pleased to announce the appointment of Corey B. Brinkema as President of FSC-US, effective November 5, 2007.

Brinkema's selection is the culmination of a national search process undertaken by the Board of FSC-US.  Brinkema, previously Executive Director of the Green Institute in Minneapolis, MN, brings with him a wealth of experience in nonprofit management, business development and fundraising. In addition he has significant experience in standards development of green building programs, and management of a business unit that has FSC chain-of-custody certification for distribution of FSC-certified building products.

The position of President of FSC-US was vacated in Winter 2007 when Roger C. Dower resigned to become President of the Johnson Foundation in Racine, WI. Ned Daly, Chief Operating Officer of FSC-US, has been leading the organization during the search process. Daly will be leaving FSC-US effective December 1, 2007 to assume the position of Executive Director of Rugmark International, an international standards-setting organization that works to end illegal child labor in the handmade carpet industry in South Asia. FSC-US is pleased that Daly will be continuing his many years of dedication and experience in environmental and social standards and policy work.

FSC Canada Bids an Appreciative Farewell to Lauren Wilson (back to top)

While Lauren was only with us for an all too short 18 months, we are the richer for her passage.  In that short time, Lauren became a cheerful, knowledgeable and helpful voice for the many people who call or e-mail us each day.  In addition to answering a myriad of questions, Lauren found the time to compose the bulk of our much-read monthly newsletters and to create the new web site that we launched just a few weeks ago.  And in between all that, Lauren organized seminars and put together the FSC Canada participation in IIDEX NeoCon, GraphicsCanada, and other tradeshows. She fulfilled orders for thousands of brochures and FSC-certified pencils and worked with us on the Winds of Change Galas in Montreal and Toronto.  Whatever will we do without her?

Lauren leaves FSC to go back to school, cooking school no less.  May she have as much success as she did with us - and as did the recent movie, Ratatouille, which if you haven’t seen it yet, is highly entertaining, maybe even inspirational?  Good luck Lauren and thanks for your dedication, we will truly miss you.

If you know someone who can fill her shoes, please have them contact us immediately.

FSC Canada Launches the FSCXpert Program at DesignThinkers 2007 (back to top)

Toronto, ON, October 17-19, 2007:  On October 17th, 2007, FSC Canada officially launched the FSCXpert Program, an educational program and designation for professionals that are passionate about the future of our forests; leaders in promoting environmental and social responsibility within their industry; educators and mentors on sustainable product purchasing; and qualified advocates for the use of FSC-certified paper products.

By working with an FSCX designated professional, paper and print services buyers will be assured of reliable guidance with respect to the factors that enter into a responsible choice of paper.  They will also be guided to FSC-certified printers, the only ones authorized to place and FSC logo and/or label on a printed product.

The launch of the program was well received by over 800 attendees at the DesignThinkers graphic design conference held October 17-19, 2007, in Toronto by RGD Ontario.  Many designers felt that this was a timely introduction for the program as their clients are requesting FSC-certified papers and they want to learn more.  The program will also be featured at Graphics Canada, November 8-10, International Centre, Toronto.

Independent Research Finds FSC to be Most Effective Certification Option (back to top)

Vancouver, BC, October 4, 2007:  New research conducted by Montreal-based management consultants ÉEM inc., and released by environmental publishing advocates Markets Initiative shows FSC to be the most effective certification system for achieving sustainable forest management in Canada.

ÉEM prepared the report for a large Canadian media company who wished to remain anonymous, author Stephanie Hamilton said.

"Forest certification schemes have competed for recognition in the market place for years, but this research clearly shows FSC as being the ideal choice when it comes to sustainability," said Nicole Rycroft , Executive Director of Vancouver-based Markets Initiative, which presented the top-level findings at an industry conference in late September.  "The value of the report is that it was independently commissioned and independently conducted while most others were conducted by industry or environmental groups."

"Many Canadian forestry companies try to "blur the lines" between various certification programs, leaving consumers - private and corporate - confused," Rycroft said.

The report found FSC to be the only system that prohibits the use of genetically modified trees, prevents the conversion of natural forests to plantations and requires a precautionary approach to the management of areas with high conservation value.  Although it found that certification systems often made mention of similar requirements, the study raised concerns that under some systems, it was left to the individual forest manager to decide what to do on the ground.  The study found that FSC was generally more rigorous in its performance requirements.

Rainforest Alliance, Gibson, Domtar and Time Inc. Commit to Clinton Global Initiative (back to top)

New York, NY, September 26, 2007:  The Rainforest Alliance announced its commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative and has agreed to work with three global leaders in the forest products sector on increasing their use of wood from responsibly managed forestlands certified to FSC's standards.  The Rainforest Alliance administers the SmartWood certification program, which is a third party FSC auditor.

FSC-certified companies Domtar and Gibson Musical Instruments and Time Inc. have pledged to increase their use of FSC-certified wood and paper products over five years. For their part, the Rainforest Alliance aims to recruit additional forestry operations for FSC certification, certify 170 million additional acres (= 68 million hectares) of forestland, increase support for certified small and medium sized businesses, develop markets for certified products and help ensure that the companies' suppliers meet FSC standards or are working toward FSC certification.

"As these three major players in the paper and musical instrument industries are demonstrating, large companies are taking sustainability seriously and considering the long-term environmental, social and economic implications of their purchases," said Tensie Whelan, executive director of the Rainforest Alliance, who attended the Clinton Global Initiative's annual meeting in New York this week. "Buying wood products from FSC-certified forestlands supports responsible forest management, conserves biodiversity and curbs deforestation."

The Clinton Global Initiative is a non-partisan project of the William J. Clinton Foundation that brings together leaders from around the world to work on solving global challenges, including poverty alleviation, global health, and energy and climate change, among others.

Hollywood Goes Green: Evan Almighty Eco-Friendly from Production to DVD Release (back to top)

No07_Evan Almighty
Toronto, ON, October 9, 2007:  Universal Studios' Evan Almighty, starring Steve Carell, Morgan Freeman and Lauren Graham, holds the distinction of being the first feature film - comedy or otherwise - to "zero out" its climate changing footprint on the environment.

Spearheaded by director Tom Shadyac, the entire production was run using environmentally friendly principles, which included the planting of thousands of trees at the primary filming location to offset the movie production's carbon emissions. Additionally, the director, who worked closely with The Conservation Fund, provided bicycles to crew members in order to encourage eco-friendly transportation and oversaw the recycling or donation of all surplus production materials to Habitat for Humanity.

But the environmental efforts didn't slow down once the cameras stopped filming. Universal Studios Home Entertainment Canada made the decision to use FSC-certified papers in the DVD packaging and printing with FSC-certified printer C.J. Graphics using soy based inks and waterless printing methods.
