FSC Canada Launches the FSCXpert Program at DesignThinkers 2007 (back to top)
Toronto, ON, October 17-19, 2007: On October 17th, 2007, FSC Canada officially launched the FSCXpert Program, an educational program and designation for professionals that are passionate about the future of our forests; leaders in promoting environmental and social responsibility within their industry; educators and mentors on sustainable product purchasing; and qualified advocates for the use of FSC-certified paper products.
By working with an FSCX designated professional, paper and print services buyers will be assured of reliable guidance with respect to the factors that enter into a responsible choice of paper. They will also be guided to FSC-certified printers, the only ones authorized to place and FSC logo and/or label on a printed product.
The launch of the program was well received by over 800 attendees at the DesignThinkers graphic design conference held October 17-19, 2007, in Toronto by RGD Ontario. Many designers felt that this was a timely introduction for the program as their clients are requesting FSC-certified papers and they want to learn more. The program will also be featured at Graphics Canada, November 8-10, International Centre, Toronto.

Independent Research Finds FSC to be Most Effective Certification Option (back to top)
Vancouver, BC, October 4, 2007: New research conducted by Montreal-based management consultants ÉEM inc., and released by environmental publishing advocates Markets Initiative shows FSC to be the most effective certification system for achieving sustainable forest management in Canada.
ÉEM prepared the report for a large Canadian media company who wished to remain anonymous, author Stephanie Hamilton said.
"Forest certification schemes have competed for recognition in the market place for years, but this research clearly shows FSC as being the ideal choice when it comes to sustainability," said Nicole Rycroft , Executive Director of Vancouver-based Markets Initiative, which presented the top-level findings at an industry conference in late September. "The value of the report is that it was independently commissioned and independently conducted while most others were conducted by industry or environmental groups."
Many Canadian forestry companies try to "blur the lines" between various certification programs, leaving consumers - private and corporate - confused, Rycroft said.
The report found FSC to be the only system that prohibits the use of genetically modified trees, prevents the conversion of natural forests to plantations and requires a precautionary approach to the management of areas with high conservation value.

Hollywood Goes Green: Evan Almighty Eco-Friendly from Production to DVD Release (back to top)
|
Spearheaded by director Tom Shadyac, the entire production was run using environmentally friendly principles, which included the planting of thousands of trees at the primary filming location to offset the movie production's carbon emissions. Additionally, the director, who worked closely with The Conservation Fund, provided bicycles to crew members in order to encourage eco-friendly transportation and oversaw the recycling or donation of all surplus production materials to Habitat for Humanity.
But the environmental efforts didn't slow down once the cameras stopped filming. Universal Studios Home Entertainment Canada made the decision to use FSC-certified papers in the DVD packaging and printing with FSC-certified printer C.J. Graphics using soy based inks and waterless printing methods.
