The FSC check-tree logo, the FSC initials and the FSC name “Forest Stewardship Council” are trademarks of FSC, and are protected by copyright. All of these elements are the intellectual property of FSC, and we take their protection very seriously. The right to use these elements is earned by FSC-certified companies.
The FSC logo on printed materials is an assurance that the materials are printed on paper that encourages healthy forests and strong communities. FSC is the only certification system widely supported by environmental groups, social groups, and academic institutions the world over. This support is based on FSC’s positive impact on our forests, transparency, independent third party auditing, and supply chain tracking. Please help FSC keep its promise to current, and to future generations by respecting the standards and trademark requirements.
In order to make a claim that a document is FSC-certified (i.e. either using the FSC logo, or by stating that it is FSC-certified), the paper the document is printed on MUST be FSC-certified, the printer or print broker producing the document MUST be FSC-certified, and the FSC product label MUST be used.
FSC can only positively influence how our forests are managed if the purchase of FSC products can be tracked back up the supply chain to create a direct incentive for forest managers to get their forest operations FSC-certified. The FSC chain of custody certification provides this connection between buyers of FSC products, and the forest. Supply chain tracking also gives customers the security of knowing that the product they purchase has been independently audited to meet FSC’s standards and that the product truly has originated in a responsible managed forest. For information on the FSC chain of custody certification process visit www.fsccanada.org/ChainofCustody.htm
Every time an FSC-certified company sells an FSC-certified product, regardless of the stage of manufacture, the company places its certification code on the product and/or of the packaging. This allows for the tracking of a product from the shelf all the way back to the forest or verified recycled source it came from. If you are printing a document on FSC-certified paper, the document’s FSC label must carry the certification code of the FSC-certified printer or the FSC-certified print broker managing the project. · For a list of certified printers visit www.fsccanada.org/fscprinters.htm · For a list of certified papers visit www.fsccanada.org/fscpaper.htm
Writing on a document that it is “printed on FSC-certified paper” must accompany the FSC logo. You can only apply the FSC logo (or make a claim) if there is independent verification that the product is FSC-certified, accomplished through chain of custody certification.
The FSC logo can be used on-products to identify those products that meet FSC’s strict environmental and social standards. The FSC label provides several pieces of information for buyers: 1) the source of fibre in the product (= FSC-certified, pre/post-consumer recycled, controlled, or a mixture of these); 2) the identity of the certified company producing the product (= certification code); 3) that the FSC logo is copyright protected (= © information); and 4) where to go for more information on FSC (= FSC website). For FSC logo/label requirements visit www.fsccanada.org/certifiedproducts.htm
The FSC logo can be used off-product for promotional or educational purposes, both by certified companies, and by approved non-certified companies. · For FSC logo requirements visit www.fsccanada.org/promotioneducation.htm
