Forest Management (FM) certification involves the verification, by a third-party Certifier, that a forest meets FSC's Forest Management Standards.
All FSC FM Standards are based on FSC's International Principles & Criteria. At a regional level indicators and verifiers are further developed in order to reflect the unique environmental and social requirements of the region. Regional FM Standards are accredited by FSC International.
In Canada there are four regional Forest Management standards:
Regional Forest Management standards are based on FSC's International Principles & Criteria, and are approved by FSC International for a five-year period, after which time they will be reviewed and, if necessary, revised.
FSC International is currently revising the FSC Principles & Criteria, which are the framework for all regional FM standards. For this reason, regional FM standards will not be revised until the new Principles & Criteria are approved at the end of 2011. Currently, accredited regional FM standards will remain valid until such time as they are revised according to the new FSC Principles & Criteria.
