Controlled Wood
Growing public concern with global environmental and social issues has resulted in a greater need for forest products companies, corporations and governments to exercise social and environmental responsibility. FSC certification provides an independent assurance that forest management meets the highest standards, supporting environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable forest management.
In many cases wood and paper products use wood from a variety of sources, some of them FSC certified and some not. In these cases companies applying the FSC Mixed Sources label must ensure that the non-FSC-certified component of the product avoids the most controversial sources.
The FSC Controlled Wood standards help FSC Chain of Custody (COC) certified companies avoid the use of unacceptable sources of wood in products carrying the FSC Mixed Sources Label. Unacceptable sources include:
a) illegally harvested wood;
b) wood harvested in violation of traditional and civil rights;
c) wood harvested in forests in which high conservation values are threatened by management activities;
d) wood harvested in forests being converted to plantations or non-forest use; and
e) wood from forests in which genetically modified trees are planted.
Controlled Wood Standards
The Standard for company evaluation of FSC Controlled Wood (FSC-STD-40-005) intended for use by manufacturers seeking to provide evidence that the wood that may be mixed with labelled FSC-certified wood has been controlled to avoid wood from the above categories.
The FSC Controlled Wood standard for forest management enterprises (FSC-STD-30-010) allows forest management enterprises to provide evidence that the wood they supply has been controlled to avoid wood from the above categories.
Controlled Wood Guidance
FSC International has published a Controlled Wood Guide for FSC Chain of Custody certified companies that outlines the steps to be followed.
FSC Canada is developing guidance material to provide relevant information relevant to companies seeking to ascertain that wood sourced from Canada can be considered as Controlled Wood. Information will be published on this website as it becomes available.
FSC Canada Work Plan for Controlled Wood Guidance
FSC Canada has prepared a first draft of an Information Matrix intended to help FSC Chain of Custody holders implement Controlled Wood requirements pertaining to use of the FSC Mixed Sources label. This draft Information Matrix is expected to evolve over time, as more information becomes available and as COC holders become more experienced with using it.
Click here to download the Draft Information Matrix. At the present time the draft information matrix is not available in French.
