Forest Management (FM) certification ensures that our forests are managed in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. For all, forever.
FM certification is applicable to all forest types and ownership structures (e.g. industrial or private forest owners, forest license holders, community forests, government-managed forests). FM certification may be granted to a single applicant, or to numerous applicants under a group certificate.
FM certification involves the evaluation of a forest by an independent third-party Certifier against FSC's Regional FM Standards, which are based on FSC's International Principles & Criteria.
Independent third-party Certifiers are accredited by FSC International to perform FSC certification audits. In order to become FSC-certified, applicants must first contact an FSC Certifier, who will conduct an assessment of the forest against FSC's regional FM standards.
Once granted, FM certificates are valid for five years, during which time Certifiers conduct annual surveillance audits. At the end of five years, companies may choose to renew their FM certificate.
The cost of FM certification is based on the location and size of the forest area being assessed. There are two parts to the cost: a certification fee based on the size and type of forest, which goes to FSC International; and an audit fee which goes to the Certifier and is the cost of the certification audit and support. Contact an FSC Certifier for a quote.
